Paris

Full of history, solid architecture, grand monuments, classic collections of art, the best of fashion cosmetics n perfumes, open-air cafes, intimate restaurants, fresh wrinkle-free croissants and dark chocolate.

Paris was born in river Seine. On this ship shaped islands, in the middle of the river, stands the 13th century cathedral of Notre Dame that gracefully soars over the rooftops. The city extends on both sides of Seine with Eiffel Tower casting its shadow over it.

The Grand Axe is the cities most glittering prospect, from the crystal pyramid Louvre, where Mona Lisa smiles till today, through the chestnut alleys across the magnificent Place de la Concorde and up the lively Champs Elysees to Arche de Triomphe, with monuments spread around it like diamonds on a necklace. Among the most spoken about are Invalides - the golden domed home built by Louis XIV, Garnier's over-the-top Opera, the Greek temple of the Madeleine, Palais Royal and La Fayette - the truly grand department stores.

We stayed in Montmartre, where 17th century gave rise to the cream domed cathedral Sacre Cour. Situated on a hill, competing its height with Eiffel, it is yet another spot to watch the city turn the lights on.

The modern architectures worth a mention include Pompidou Centre, holding a great collection of 20th century art, and Grande Arche which is criticised as "television with a blank screen"! Outside the city we visited Parc Disneyland (Euro-Disney) and Versailles Palace which is famous for its grandeur. Its garden stretches in acres!

Hot Paninis (grilled Sandwich), sugar-coated Crepes (like Dosa) or Waffles drenched in chocolate sauce keep you going and offer some change from the monumentality. Or you could escape in a smart cafe along the boulevards and indulge in Paris' favourite pastime - watching the world go by.

Strolling along the quays of river Seine, lingering in the leafy squares and parks, sharing an intimate table in a sidewalk cafe, and a candle-light dinner after watching the sun set over the city: these are classic romantic themes, real-life couples will always have as long as there is Paris.
